Babysitting can be fun and it can bring out the best in you and the child you are babysitting. However, babysitting toddlers is not as easy as many would assume; it requires patience, alertness and extra care.
Unlike babysitting older kids, leaving a toddler alone can be very dangerous. A toddler needs constant supervision because he could easily swallow a small object, choke under a pillow or fall out of the crib and it could happen in a matter of seconds.
Regularly Check Diapers
Many toddlers still can’t tell you when they require a diaper change. To make sure the child does not develop any rashes from keeping on a dirty diaper for too long, make sure to regularly check his diapers. If the toddler is potty trained, make sure to ask about his potty habits.
Give Snacks Between Meals
Toddlers usually need to eat more than older kids so make sure you have healthy snacks ready for the toddler in between meals. Check with the parents regarding any food allergies or forbidden snacks.
Be Ready for Emergencies
Make sure you have a first aid kit ready and be sure to ask the parents for a list of emergency numbers. Moreover, taking a few first aid and CPR training classes could be very helpful in urgent situations and in case of accidents.
Follow the Parents’ Footsteps
When it comes to disciplining a toddler, things can get tricky! Discuss rules and discipline methods with the parents beforehand and make sure you apply them. Inconsistency can be very destructive and might cause various problems such as toddler tantrums.
Finally, you must remember to be fun and kind, watch what you say and do and learn how to comfort and soothe the toddler whenever he needs it.
Wishing you the best of luck on your next babysitting adventure!
