As a follow up to my post on “Top Tips for Babysitting Boys”, today I will get into more details and share with you some smart babysitting ideas for 9-year olds. Buckle up and enjoy the ride!
Set Limits & Obey Rules(that should never be broken)
Especially when babysitting older kids, limits need to be set and rules should be obeyed. Make sure you follow the parents’ footsteps while enforcing those rules and inform the parents of any disobedience.
Understand The Difference(between younger & older kids)
You should be aware that older kids enjoy different activities and have different preferences than younger kids so if you are used to babysitting younger kids, you need to do your research on what activities would get them interested in spending quality time with you or even on their own (with proper supervision of course).
Be Prepared for Lies (and even excuses)
As opposed to younger kids, kids who are 9 years old or older actually have a greater propensity for lying and making up stories and excuses and they tend to do it more often with a younger babysitter. So be firm and make sure you follow up on their bedtime routine and their homework schedule with the parents in advance.
Learn to Handle Power Struggles (and avoid them)
Learn how to talk to 9-year olds. Be sure to use phrases such as “I’m not here to babysit you, I’m here to spend time with you” or “I am only following your parents’ instructions”.
Don’t Be Scared of Minor Cuts(or injuries)
Kids will fall and injure themselves no matter how hard you are trying to protect them just be sure to be ready when it happens and inquire what you should do in case of more serious accidents.
Come Prepared(and let them like you)
If you take some time and prepare fun activities that you can do with them in advance, kids, even the most difficult ones, will like spending more time with you.
Bring Snacks & Treats(approved by the parents)
Learning what the kids enjoy as snacks, such as popcorn, and sharing a bag with them over a nice cartoon will help you bond more with the 9-year old you are babysitting.
Finally, make sure you spend some time with the kids before you begin babysitting them so you will have a general sense of their personalities, how to treat them and know more about their likes and dislikes.
